Frequently Asked Questions Femina
Q: Can Anyone Use EMS?
A: People with implanted electronic equipment, such as pacemakers and intracardial defibrillators, must NOT be treated with electrical stimulation. Pregnant women should NOT use electrical stimulation during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy
Q: When can I Start Using Tens during my Pregnancy?
A: There are no medical studies showing Tens to be unsafe to use in the beginning of pregnancy. However to be completely safe we recommend that you start using Tens after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Then you can use your Femina regularly to get to know your stimulator and also to get in good shape for delivery.
Use the stimulator for your aching back and other pains during your pregnancy and start the stimulation at home as soon as the contractions begin. Remember that you can use Tens for afterbirth pain and post caesarean pain as well.
Q: Where do I Place the Electrodes?
A: Place the electrodes in the painful area. Try different electrode placements until the stimulation covers the whole painful area. Use 2 or 4 electrodes depending on the location of the pain and the size of the area you want to cover. A distance of 3 to 30 cm between the electrodes is recommended.
Q: Where Should I NOT Place the Electrodes?
A: Do not place electrodes directly over the uterus or connect pairs of electrodes across the abdomen. The reason is that, theoretically, the current could affect the foetus's heart (although there are no reports of it being harmful).
If you have pain in the front, it is better to place one of the electrodes in the groin area, and the other electrode (on the same cord) on the outer part of the hip or on the back. This placement is safe, since two electrodes connected to the same cord always work together.
Q: Can Tens be Used During CTG Monitoring?
A: External CTG monitoring will never interfere with Tens. However if a scalp electrode is used, Tens may cause interference with the CTG monitor (depending on the equipment). In this case, you have to turn off the stimulator temporarily.
Q: For How Long Does the Electrodes Last?
A: The self adhesive electrodes last for approximately 20 to 40 uses. The durability depends on how good the care and maintenance instructions are followed.
Q: Are There any Side Effects with Electrical Stimulation?
A: No Tens stimulation is completely safe without any side effects for the mother or unborn baby
